Behind… “Sharing the Secret”

In 2001, the 60th Annual Peabody Awards recognized outstanding local and national programming dealing with health and medical issues by presenting the Peabody/Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Award for Excellence in Health and Medical Programming.

The winner was Robert Greenwald Productions, Inc.‘s film “Sharing the Secret,” an emotionally complex drama about the destructive nature of teen eating disorders that sought to open doors to dialogue about the causes and effects of bulimia as well as effective treatment for the condition.

This documentary explores the creation of this television film, and the challenges that the producers faced in bringing emotionally sensitive material to the viewer in a way that was neither exploitative nor sensationalist.
