Personal Award: Dr. James R. Killian Jr. for Broadcasting Education

Scientist, administrator, teacher, and public servant, Dr. James R. Killian, Jr. has given freely of his talents to the enrichment of television. As Chairman of the Carnegie Commission on Educational Television, he led his distinguished colleagues and staff in a searching study of the medium, with exceptionally thoughtful recommendations for an effective course of action. The Commission’s work won the support of the President and the Congress in 1967, and the result is the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, with new and broadened goals for noncommercial television. Dr. Killian exemplifies the significant role a citizen can play in improving his community and nation, and deepens one’s faith in the democratic process. In recognition, a Peabody Special Broadcasting Education Award.
